The White House Historical Association has been manufacturing an annual ornament since 1981. Each year, a new design is created honoring the next President in succession. The 2013 White House Ornament highlights Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) who was an eternal optimist with a desire for lasting world peace. The centerpiece of the ornament is an American elm tree planted by President Wilson on the North Lawn of the White House on December 18, 1913. The words on the reverse side of the ornament were delivered by President Wilson in his War Message to Congress of April 2, 1917: Peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty.
